DIVINE WORD MISSIONARIES

Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) is a Catholic Religious Missionary congregation, founded in 1875 by St. Arnold Janssen in Steyl, Netherlands. Engaged in the universal evangelizing mission of the Catholic Church, the SVD has been active in Ghana since 1938. Over the years, the congregation has expanded its presence to eight dioceses and one vicariate in Ghana, comprising a total of one hundred and twenty-three (123) confreres in final vows, with a significant number being indigenous Ghanaian priests and religious brothers. Additionally, the congregation includes lay collaborators, known as “Friends of the SVD.”

The SVD Ghana Province, adhering to the principles of Catholic Social Teachings and biblical pastoral ministry, is committed to holistic development and the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the communities it serves. Through its Projects and Development Office, the province undertakes various socio-pastoral developmental projects aimed at empowering the poor and marginalized segments of society. These initiatives strive to enhance living conditions and promote human dignity among the beneficiaries.

The concept of “option for the poor” is inherent to the SVD’s commitment to Justice and Peace and the integrity of Creation (JPIC), serving as a guiding principle in their ministry. By addressing the needs of the marginalized and advocating for social justice, the SVD Ghana Province endeavours to contribute positively to the well-being of the communities it serves.

SVD GHANA PROJECTS AND DEVELOPMENT OFFICE

The SVD Ghana Project and Development Office (SVD-GHA PDO) was established in 2015 to centralize and oversee all projects undertaken by the SVDs in Ghana. Its primary aim is to ensure the effective delivery of the congregation’s missionary mandate across its various apostolates within the province. A key objective in establishing this office is to promote self-reliance within the SVD Ghana-Liberia province.

The SVD-GHA PDO is dedicated to advancing the developmental agenda of the province, believing that by doing so, it can facilitate the growth and development of both its members and the communities they serve. One of its core functions is to provide support and training to members of the province in socio-pastoral project management, including project planning, execution, and reporting. Through these efforts, the office seeks to equip the SVD Ghana province with the necessary skills and resources to succeed in its self-reliance endeavours, ultimately enabling it to offer a comprehensive missionary service to the people of Ghana and Liberia.

Currently headquartered in Accra, the capital of Ghana, the SVD-GHA PDO serves as a central hub for coordinating and monitoring the province’s various projects and initiatives, ensuring their alignment with the congregation’s mission and values.
